At DrupalCon Portland 2022, a pivotal conversation about sustainability in open-source software sparked a movement. Developers Darren Oh and Salim Lakhani, alongside a coalition of Drupal enthusiasts, envisioned a platform that would empower creators to thrive while giving back to the community. This is the story of Drupal Forge—a nonprofit initiative under the OPS Association—and how it became the ultimate platform to Demo Drupal solutions while fostering altruism and innovation.

 

The Catalyst: A Community at a Crossroads

The open-source ecosystem faced a critical challenge: companies leveraging free software without contributing back threatened to overshadow the "makers" who built it. Jacob Rockowitz, maintainer of the widely used Webform module, voiced this struggle: maintaining projects like his had become unsustainable without financial support. Darren Oh proposed a revolutionary idea—launch buttons that would let users spin up trial sites (like Simplytest.me) and convert them into hosted solutions. This model would generate recurring revenue for maintainers, allowing them to focus on development. Salim Lakhani of DevPanel quickly joined forces, devising payment systems and technical workflows. Together, they laid the groundwork for what would become Drupal Forge, a nonprofit project under the OPS Association, a 501(c)(3) organization.
